AUSTRALIAN BIOSPHERE CONFERENCE PROGRAM
The inaugural Australian Biosphere Reserves Conference endeavours to champion and encourage UNESCOs Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Program to establish a scientific basis for the improvement of relationships between people and their environments.
Launched in 1971, UNESCO’s MAB s an Intergovernmental Scientific program comprising of 686 biosphere reserves in 122 countries including 9 within Australia representing a unique tool for international co-operation through sharing knowledge, exchanging experiences, building capacity and promoting best practices.
Queensland’s Great Sandy Biosphere will be the host of the Australian Biosphere Conference, a thriving example of the MAB ethos using ‘interdisciplinary approaches to understand and adapt to changes and interactions between social and ecological systems, including conflict prevention and management of biodiversity the solutions reconciling the conservation of biodiversity with its sustainable use’.
It is anticipated that over 400 delegates from all Australian States and Territories, along with International guests will attend. An organising committee comprising of UNESCO delegated Great Sandy Biosphere Reverse Management group, Burnett Mary Regional Group, Queensland Parks and Wildlife, University of Sunshine Coast; Sustainability Research Centre, Regional Council representatives from Fraser Coast, Bundaberg and Gympie, and Traditional Owner Groups represented within the Biosphere Reserve.
